Embedded wireless monitoring systems to open up the field of possibilities!

The micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) which consumes less energy, are today more precise and less expensive. Coupled with the evolution of wireless communication technologies, it makes it possible and affordable to set up wireless distributed, multifunctional, smart and communicating systems to capture unpublished data.

Accurate, lightweight, these systems based on new generation, miniature wireless smart sensors, can be placed as closer as possible to critical points, on assets or subjects, mobile or in motion, to capture previously unattainable data. They pave the way for the development of innovative applications.

Being wireless, autonomous and miniaturized, the new generation of sensors and / or acquisition nodes makes it possible to consider embedded monitoring of mobile assets. The diversity, accuracy, and reliability of the data they capture opens up new areas of exploration.

These embedded monitoring systems capture crucial data. These data are collected as close as possible to the critical element, in real conditions, they are relevant, precise and reflect reality. Pre-processed, they provide direct access to unprecedented useful information.

Thus, these systems deliver, in real time and continuously if necessary, various data to the collection point that manages their synchronization, correlation and / or combination to give access to exploitable information. They provide information that will offer considerable room for improvement in understanding what impacts activities that have been previously excluded from these opportunities.

A wind of innovation blows on the understanding of reality: this is embodied by the three cases of applications in absolutely different universes, described below

Get a new level of information for vehicles fleets monitoring

The potential of wireless monitoring systems embedded on vehicles, enable to go far beyond the simple monitoring offered by real-time geolocation of fleets of vehicles and gears.

Trucks, buses, coaches, tractors, construction equipment … these vehicles have specificities and are subject to strong constraints that justify the need for the finest monitoring possible to ensure the expected level of service and to keep them in operational condition.

Industrial vehicles for example, are supposed to travel thousands of kilometers, carrying very heavy loads. They undergo rolling conditions of great diversity. The severity of the roads stretches the shock absorbers capacity, their declivity constrains the braking systems controlling the force generated by their weight and their load. Whatever the purpose (transport of people, goods or cargo) the common stake is clearly to keep the vehicles in operational condition. It is decisive to be able to understand the driving conditions and monitor their impact in parallel.

The quasi-non-intrusive miniature wireless nodes and the multiplicity of associated miniature sensors on which the embedded wireless monitoring systems are relying, enable to consider a richer instrumentation of the vehicles and obtain a much greater variety of data (temperature, humidity, acceleration, vibration, shock…).

Reliably collected, live, in real conditions, these timestamped and synchronized data captured closer to the critical points are processed on to the embedded system to transform these crucial data into valuable information. It is now possible to anticipate abnormal wear or risk of damage by identifying the vehicle’s driving conditions and their impacts in order to deduce the required maintenance.

At the same time, the sensors battery life offers long time series of data so that the behavior can be analyzed over a period sufficiently representative of the activity in comparison with theroad courses type of pavement, their severity and / or gradient. This knowledge feeds the approach of improvement of the gear, to increase their resistance and thus their durability.

In addition to the wireless nature of the systems and the sensitivity of the measurements and thanks to the Ad hoc battery life of the sensors, it is in the capacity of these systems to trace over long periods of time, valuable information, easily exploitable that lies the power of wireless embedded monitoring.

It is undeniable, these systems feed the operational monitoring, the programming of the preventive maintenance actions and the study of the real conditions of operations with unpublished data allowing to bring condition monitoring to a higher level.

Giving to R&D access to unexplored areas

The data of temperature, humidity, position, trajectory, displacement, vibration, acceleration, shock or of noise are part of the multitude of parameters, to study to clarify the understanding of certain phenomena and consider in their impact on the activities.

Designed to be multi-sensor, wireless embedded systems can also integrate inertial and GPS location components or functions such as voice recording to provide a significant source of knowledge and understanding of what is alive.

Based on advanced multisensory smart sensor technologies, combining low energy consumption computing capabilities, versatile architectures and wireless communications, these systems open unexplored perspectives in numerous areas: sports, patient rehabilitation, ethology, sociology …

Indeed, these data analyzed through the prism of the disciplines of the human and social sciences presage the enrichment of knowledge and the completion of expertise.

The almost non-intrusive nature of portable proximity sensors and their compliance with radio frequency safety standards make it possible, for example, to collect social contacts and their associated data.

They already give rise to many experiments with an innovative multidisciplinary approach integrating the science of networks, to understand, for instance, the acquisition of language related to sociolinguistics, the spread of bacteria or viruses in the hospital or to model impact of networks of contact interactions between individuals.

Providing spectators an unparalleled immersive experience of sport events

Specially dedicated to the collection of field data in mobility contexts or on moving assets or individuals, embedded systems integrate latest generation technologies for almost instantaneous exchange of multidimensional tracking data to broadcast it instantaneously and continuously with the multimedia stream. MEMS inertial sensors, radio and A-GPS and / or D-GPS locating components, long-distance connectivity, wireless local communications …

They then offer to geolocate the targets and take a multitude of measurements, closer to the targets to deliver the information in real time and track their routes, trajectory movements, displacements, performances…

It is thus possible to follow a manifestation in all its details, in all its dimensions, in real time and in a mapped way.

Position, trajectory, speed, performance … These detailed live data, with unparalleled precision, come with their spatial and temporal coordinates, allowing publishers to offer a captivating experience throughout the retransmission that captures and holds the audience attention living precisely every moment of the event.

Captured in real time, the data enrich the storytelling by providing unique content for the audience. More innovative than ever, the multimedia broadcast makes viewers, Internet users and professionals react by mixing video streaming and dynamic digital content for an enhanced experience.

What we must remember

Embedded systems on mobile subjects or assets reach levels of requirement allowing them to be compatible with the most constrained use cases. It is also what allows wireless instrumentation to become more democratic, to open up to new combinations of disciplines and to generate new fields of application.

In fact, new technologies make a very wide range of data accessible and facilitate the development of wireless nodes that deliver an unparalleled level of performance in capturing physical parameters that meet the needs of specific explorations, very high levels of requirements and integrates a logic of correlation and fusion of data.

This is how no wireless embedded system looks like another. Although the sensors that compose it may be based on a common acquisition node base, each situation will require an adaptation and a choice of sensor that will make the system unique and therefore relevant.

This is how the wireless embedded monitoring systems open the field of possibilities!
